Each player is usually dealt a predetermined number of cards from a standard deck to start the game. Creating valid sets or runs—sets being groups of three or four cards of the same rank, and runrummy game alls being sequences of three or more cards in consecutive order from the same suit—is the goal. Players alternately draw cards from the discard or stockpile in an effort to strengthen their hands while also monitoring the tactics of their rivals. The game keeps going until one player declares "Rummy" and wins the round by successfully combining all of their cards into legal combinations.
